The difference between Hemp Oil and CBD Oil is something that many people new to the world of medical cannabis or CBD Oil will get wrong.
Afterall, these two things are actually very closely related.
The difference, however, is important to understand. A consumer looking for a product that won’t make them fail a drug test should be fine with hemp oil, but maybe not with CBD oil.
CBD Oil vs Hemp Oil
In order to understand the difference between Hemp Oil and CBD Oil first we need to look at exactly what Hemp is in comparison to what CBD is. Once you know that, it’s actually pretty easy to figure out the distinction.
We’ll start by looking at the what the hemp plant is.
What is Hemp?
Hemp is a special strain of the cannabis plant. Unlike marijuana, hemp was historically classified as a cannabis plant that had a low THC % where marijuana tends to be strains much higher in THC.
In 2014 a standard was decided upon that any cannabis plant with less than 0.3% THC content would be considered “Industrial Hemp”. As the name would suggest, this is more of an industrial crop than marijuana, which is still a relatively natural grown crop.
What is CBD (Cannabidiol)?
CBD, unlike hemp, is not a plant at all. CBD is actually a chemical compound from the cannabinoid family, which is found in the cannabis plant.
Until recently, CBD was greatly overshadowed in news and media by the better-known cannabinoid, THC. While strains of cannabis contain up to 50 different cannabiniods, most of the current attention is on CBD and THC.
THC is what gives you a “High” when it’s consumed and is the main chemical that has given cannabis a bad rap in the past.
CBD on the other hand, gives you many of the same health benefits without the psychoactive effects of THC.
Because of this, CBD is beneficial for athletes whose sports test for THC or professionals who must pass drug tests for work.
Now that we know that hemp is actually a plant, and CBD is a chemical that comes from all cannabis plants (including hemp), the difference between the two starts to become more clear.
As you can probably guess, Hemp Oil is oil that is derived from any hemp plant. CBD oil on the other hand can come from any cannabis plant, but always contains high amounts of the cannabinoid CBD.
So, most CBD oil is also hemp oil, but not all hemp oil qualifies as CBD Oil.
Pretty easy, right?
It is important to note that almost all CBD Oil is low in THC, so unless it is advertised as a marijuana derived, or a 1:1 CBD/THC product, it is probably a low THC variety.
